Stage and screen star Joseph Campanella died May 16 at the age of 93 of natural causes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
A Tony and two-time Emmy nominee, Mr. Campanella was born in New York in November 1924 and attended Holy Cross before serving in the Navy during World War II. He would later receive a BA in English Literature from Manhattan College and subsequently attended Columbia University graduate school for speech and drama.
Before his lengthy acting career, Mr. Campanella also worked as a radio sportscaster, a broadcaster, and a TV stuntman. The latter, which led to many TV roles, followed studies with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio.
Mr. Campanella made his Broadway debut in 1962 in the short-lived The Captains and the Kings, which played seven performances at the Playhouse Theatre. His role as Daniel Stein in Garson Kanin's A Gift of Time earned him a 1962 Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play. His final Broadway appearance was opposite Judy Holliday in the 1963 musical Hot Spot, which played 43 performances at the Majestic Theatre.
The actor, however, made his strongest impression in a TV career that spanned over 40 years with scores of appearances. He received both a Primetime Emmy nomination (in 1968 for Mannix) and a Daytime Emmy nomination (in 1989 for Days of Our Lives).
Among his numerous other TV credits: Ed Cooper, Bonnie Franklin's ex-husband on the groundbreaking CBS sitcom One Day at a Time; Hutch Corrigan on the Dynasty spinoff, The Colbys; a 1973 episode of the Emmy-winning Mary Tyler Moore Show that featured Campanella as one of Mary Richards’ former great loves; David Hasselhoff's father on Baywatch; plus several appearances on The Practice, That's Life, Spider-Man, Road Rovers, Knots Landing, Beauty and the Beast, Dallas, Mama's Family, The Love Boat, Quincy M.E., Medical Center, Ironside, and Murder, She Wrote.
Mr. Campanella also appeared on the silver screen in such films as Child Under a Leaf, Meteor, Ben, The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and Murder, Inc.
Mr. Campanella had seven sons with singer-dancer Jill Bartholomew, whom he married in 1964. His brother, Frank Campanella, who died in 2006, was also an actor.
