The Sept. 21 New York City unveiling and dedication of six Broadway songwriter U.S. postage stamps was alive with the sound of music, sung by the likes of Barbara Cook, Kristin Chenoweth, Faith Prince, Roger Bart and Tom Wopat.
Nov. 18, composer George and lyricist Ira Gershwin were celebrated for the third time on 50th Street, this time with the honorary renaming of the block between 8th Avenue and Broadway as Gershwin Way. The Gershwin name is already preserved in the Gershwin Theatre and the Gershwin luxury apartment complex.
The brothers Gershwin -- lyricist Ira and composer George -- already have a theatre and a new luxury apartment building named after them on Manhattan's 50th Street between 8th Avenue and Broadway, so who could ask for anything more? City officials, developers, theatre fans and Gershwin family members, that's who.
