Nazimova's 39th Street Theatre

Nazimova’s 39th Street Theatre was located at 119 W. 39th Street and designed by architect William A. Swasey. Built in 1910, the Shuberts produced this theatre in honor of their successful client, popular actress Alla Nazimova. The actress was a favorite leading lady for playwrights Ibsen and Chekov. Fittingly, the theatre opened with a production of Henrik Ibsen’s Little Eyolf, starring Nazimova herself. When Alla Nazimova left the Shuberts a year later for a contract proposal with leading theatre manager Charles Frohman, the theatre became known simply as the 39th Street. As the 39th Street Theatre, stars such as Frank Craven, H.B. Warner, Annie Russell, Douglas Fairbanks, and John Barrymore graced the stage. The Shuberts sold the theatre to developer A.E. Lefcourt, who had it demolished in 1926.
