On October 19, 1903, the Hudson Theatre opened with the premiere of Cousin Kate, starring theatre legend Ethel Barrymore. Later, Hudson Theatre management transitioned when producer Henry B. Harris perished on the RMS Titanic. His wife Rene Harris survived and took over management for the Hudson Theatre, becoming the first female producer in New York City. This theatre showcased many notable productions including Lillian Hellman’s Toys in the Attic, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Lindsay and Crouse’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play State of the Union. Eventually, NBC purchased the Hudson in the 1950s for use as a television studio for live programs such as The Tonight Show. In 1980, concert promoter Ron Delsener refurbished the Hudson Theatre and renamed it the Savoy, an unsuccessful nightclub and rock venue. The theatre became a New York City landmark and is currently housed within the Millennium Broadway Hotel.
