Stereophonic, the 2024 Tony-winning Best Play, completes its multi-extended Broadway run January 12. The play, which recently recouped its investment, ends its run at the Golden Theatre following 305 performances and 16 previews.
As previously announced, the production will roar back to life in May 2025 with a West End engagement at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre, with a U.S. tour also scheduled to begin in October.
The final Broadway cast features Benjamin Anthony Anderson, Tony winner Will Brill, Andrew Butler, Amy Forsyth, Eli Gelb, Rebecca Naomi Jones, and Chris Stack. Brill, Butler, Gelb, and Stack have been with the production since its world premiere at Playwrights Horizons.
Written by David Adjmi, Stereophonic follows an unnamed '70s rock band recording their sophomore album. It features original music by Will Butler, formerly of the band Arcade Fire. Stereophonic made history last year by earning 13 Tony Award nominations: the most of any play, ever. It went on to win five Tonys, including Best Play, Best Director (Daniel Aukin), Best Featured Actor (Will Brill), Best Scenic Design (David Zinn) and Best Sound Design (Ryan Rumery).
Director Aukin and his entire creative team from the initial Off-Broadway run at Playwrights Horizons continued with the production to Broadway, including costume designer Enver Chakartash, lighting designer Jiyoun Chang, sound designer Ryan Rumery, and music director Justin Craig.
The Broadway run has been produced by Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions, and Ashley Melone and Nick Mills.
