Regional News 5 Broadway Musicals Will Play Marriott Theatre in 2023

Andrew Lippa and John August's Big Fish will launch the upcoming season in Lincolnshire, Illinois.

Lincolnshire, Illinois' Marriott Theatre has announced its 2023 season, which will feature five Broadway musicals.

The upcoming season, under the direction of new Executive Producer Peter Blair and Artistic Director Peter Marston Sullivan, will begin January 25, 2023, with the 2013 Andrew Lippa-John August musical Big Fish, based on the novel of the same name. Directed by Henry Godinez and choreographed by Tommy Rapley, the production will officially open February 1 and continue through March 19.

The spring will welcome the 1956 Tony winner for Best Musical, Damn Yankees, featuring a score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, a book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop, based on Wallop's novel. Directed by James Vásquez with choreography by Tyler Hanes, performances are scheduled for April 12-June 4 with opening night April 19.

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, directed and choreographed by Amber Mak, will follow, playing June 21-August 13 with a June 28 opening. The true story of Buddy Holly’s meteoric rise, from the moment when “That’ll Be the Day” hit the airwaves in 1957 until his tragic death less than two years later, played Broadway's Shubert in 1990. The musical features such pop hits as “Peggy Sue,” “Everyday,” Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba,” The Big Bopper’s “Chantilly Lace,” and “Oh Boy.”

Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne, and Stephen Sondheim's Gypsy, about the ultimate stage mother and the rise to fame of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, will begin previews at the Marriott August 23 prior to an official opening August 30. Directed by Victor Malana Maog and choreographed by Stephanie Klemons, the 1959 classic will continue through October 15.

The 2023 season will conclude with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, directed by Jessica Fisch. With a book by Tony and Oscar nominee Douglas McGrathBeautiful chronicles the rise of the songwriting teams of Carole King and Gerry Goffin and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and features their hits “So Far Away,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” Performances are set for November 1-December 31 with a November 8 opening.

The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences season includes You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, directed and choreographed by Linda Fortunato, running February 17-April 1; Mo WillemsElephant and Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!,” directed by Johanna McKenzie Miller and choreographed by Laura Savage, running July 14-August 13; and The Snow Queen, directed by Landree Fleming, running November 17-December 31.
