American Theatre Wing Gala Will Honor Unsung Heroes of the Theatre Industry

The American Theatre Wing's 2023 Gala, scheduled for September 11 at Cipriani 42nd Street, will honor Unsung Heroes of the Theatre Industry, members of the theatrical community who don’t often get the recognition they deserve.

Those celebrated will include dressers, understudies and swings, makeup artists, and other contributors to the theatrical art form. The evening will feature performances and appearances by theatre artists, all shining a spotlight on their personal unsung heroes—the participating performers will identify the theatre makers to be honored at the gala.

Proceeds will benefit such ATW programs as The Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative, The Jonathan Larson Grants, and Springboard to Design, as well as the production of ATW’s Masterclass Series.

“The turmoil of the pandemic has served to underscore just how vital these long-overlooked theatre-makers are to the functioning of this entire art form,” says ATW President and CEO Heather Hitchens. “These honorees deserve to be celebrated, and we look forward to shining a light on everything they do.”
