The Denver Center for the Performing Arts production of The Who’s Tommy, directed by Sam Buntrock, officially opens April 27 following previews that began April 20 in the Stage Theatre. Performances continue through May 27.

The cast is headed by Andy Mientus (Les Misérables, Spring Awakening) in the title role with Charl Brown (Motown the Musical) as Captain Walker, Carson Elrod (Peter and the Starcatcher) as Uncle Ernie, Lulu Fall (Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812) as Acid Queen, David Hess (Sunset Boulevard) as Minister/Specialist/Judge, Sara Kapner (Hollywood Arms) as Sally Simpson, Gareth Keegan (CBS’ Instinct) as Cousin Kevin/Lover, Charlie Korman as Young Cousin Kevin, Betsy Morgan (The King and I) as Mrs. Walker, Timothy John Smith (NBC’s The Blacklist) as Hawker, and Owen Zitek as Youth Tommy. The role of Young Tommy (age 4) is shared by Samuel Bird and Radley Wright.

The ensemble also includes Joe Beauregard, Terence Reddick, Olivia Sullivent, and Erin Willis. Corbin Payne and Katie Drinkard serve as swings, and Tristan Champion Regini is the youth understudy.

The Who’s Tommy features music and lyrics by Pete Townshend, a book by Townshend and Des McAnuff, and additional music and lyrics by John Entwistle and Keith Moon.

Based on The Who’s 1969 rock concept album, the musical follows young Tommy, who retreats into a world of darkness and silence after a deeply traumatic incident, but when he discovers a newfound talent for pinball, he’s swept up in the fame and fortune of his success.

The production also has choreography by Katie Spelman, musical direction by Gregg Coffin, scenic design by Jason Sherwood, costume design by Kevin Copenhaver, lighting design by David Weiner, sound design by Ken Travis, projection design by Alex Basco Koch, fight direction by Geoffrey Kent, and vocal and dialect coaching by Kathryn G. Maes Ph.D.

Casting is by Telsey + Company/Rachel Hoffman, Rebecca Scholl, and Grady Soapes. Kurt Van Raden is the stage manager, and Corin Ferris and Michael Morales are the assistant stage managers.
