November 19: The American Irish Historical Society Townhouse on the Upper East Side is transformed for The Dead, 1904, an immersive adaptation of James Joyce’s short story The Dead that includes wine and dinner. The show takes place over the three floors of the house, which has been restored to period decoration, with an audience of 42 invited to each performance. Kate Burton (Scandal), and four-time Tony winner Boyd Gaines (Gypsy, Contact) are among the cast.
November 22: Tony winner Sam Gold returns to New York Theatre Workshop to direct David Oyelowo in the title role, and Daniel Craig as famed foe Iago in William Shakespeare’s Othello.
OPENING
November 17: The world premiere of Dead Poets Society opens at the Classic Stage Company with Jason Sudeikis starring as professor John Keating. The new play is based on the beloved 1989 film, adapted by Academy Award winner Tom Schulman from his own screenplay. Tony winner John Doyle directs.
November 20: The New Group’s revival of Sweet Charity, starring two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster, officially opens Off-Broadway. Neil Simon, Cy Coleman, and Dorothy Fields’ classic musical is directed by Leigh Silverman with choreography by Joshua Bergasse.
November 21: This Day Forward, a new comedy about love, marriage, and the secrets of one’s past, opens at the Vineyard Theatre. The world premiere reunites director Mark Brokaw and playwright Nicky Silver following their collaboration on The Lyons, which transferred to Broadway in 2012 following a hit run at The Vineyard.
November 25: The Illusionists returns to Broadway for its third consecutive holiday engagement. In The Illusionists — Turn of the Century, audiences are invited to discover first-hand the spectacles that transformed stage entertainment over 100 years ago with a cast of world famous magicians.
LAST CHANCE
November 20: Bedlam’s acclaimed staging of Sense & Sensibility plays its final performance after numerous extensions and a string of positive reviews from New York City critics. Performances are at the Gym at Judson.
November 20: The world premiere of Samuel D. Hunter’s The Harvest concludes its engagement at the Claire Tow Theater as part of Lincoln Center’s LCT3 programming. The new play is about a group of missionaries in Middle America who are preparing to go to the Middle East.
November 20: The Flea Theater concludes performances of Two Class Acts, an evening made up of two world-premiere one-act plays by A.R. Gurney. The show is the final production at the Flea’s longtime home on White Street, where it was founded in 1996. The theatre will resume performances in spring 2017 at its previously-announced new home at 20 Thomas Street in Tribeca.
SPECIAL EVENTS
November 18: Harry Potter film spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is released in theatres nationally. Eddie Redmayne, a Tony winner for Red and a 2015 Oscar winner for The Theory of Everything, stars as Newt, a graduate of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, who specializes in magical and supernatural animals.
November 18: The soundtrack to Disney’s forthcoming animated film musical Moana is released on CD in advance of the film’s November 23 release. Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote songs for the movie, along with Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i. You can pre-order it on Amazon.com.
November 21: Manhattan Theatre Club honors two-time Tony winner Nathan Lane at its 2016 fall benefit at 583 Park Avenue in New York. The evening features a star-studded lineup of Lane’s colleagues and friends, including Into the Woods star and Golden Globe nominee Christine Baranski, playwright Terrence McNally, The Front Page co-star John Slattery, and Tony winners Brian Dennehy and Matthew Broderick.
November 22: Four-time Tony Award nominee Judy Kuhn, most recently seen in the Tony-winning musical Fun Home, joins the critically-acclaimed Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof in the role of Golde. Kuhn is playing the part through the show’s final performance on December 31
November 22: Food Network celebrity chef Alton Brown takes over Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre for his live culinary show, Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science. The show features songs, comedy, puppets and of course, cooking demonstrations.
November 24: Join thousands of New Yorkers in the theatre district for the 90th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The casts of Broadway's Holiday Inn, Cats, Paramour and Waitress are among the performers, along with performers from NBC’s Hairspray Live!, and the world-famous Radio City Rockettes. Can't make it? The parade will be broadcast nationally on NBC at 9 AM ET.
