Obituaries Broadway Marquees Dim for Late Tony Winner Gavin Creel December 3

The ceremony is one of the highest honors for a Broadway artist.

Gavin Creel Matthew Murphy

The lights of all Broadway theatres dim for one minute in memory of late Tony winner Gavin Creel December 3 at 6:45 PM. The honor is among the highest offered for Broadway artists. MCC Theater, where Creel debuted his original musical Walk On Through in 2023, will also participate in the dimming ceremony.

A beloved fixture of the Broadway community, Creel passed away September 30 at the age of 48 after battling a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma. Noted for versatile acting performances in a career that saw him often alternate between comedy and drama, leading man and character actor, Creel's numerous Broadway credits included Thoroughly Modern Millie, La Cage aux Folles, She Loves Me, Hello, Dolly!, and more. The dimming ceremony follows a public memorial celebration held at Broadway's St. James Theatre December 2. The event featured remarks and performances from Creel's sisters Heather and Allyson, Broadway Inspirational Voices, Sara Bareilles, Melody Racine, Joshua Henry, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Audra McDonald, Will Swenson, Caissie Levy, Nadia DiGiallonardo, and more.

Creel was initially set to receive a partial dimming ceremony. After immense online outcry, including a petition which accumulated over 20,000 signatures, the Broadway League announced that Creel would receive a full dimming.

Donations in Creel's memory are suggested to be made to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
