The original Tony nominated director of the Broadway (and its prior off-Broadway incarnation) Moritz von Stuelpnagel is directing a new English company in Robert Askins's Tony nominated play. The cast comprises Janie Dee, Neil Pearson, Harry Melling, Jemina Rooper and Kevin Mains. It is produced in London by original Broadway producer Kevin McCollum joined by new U.K partner Nica Burns.
The play is described in press materials as a semi-autobiographical story featuring one dead father, one messed up family, one girl who just wants to help, one school bully who always gets his own way, one man of the church offering comfort. And one hand puppet called Tyrone who is completely out of control.
In a press statement, McCollum has commented, "After enjoying a wonderful journey in New York from a small 70-seat theater to Broadway, we are beyond thrilled to bring Hand to God to the West End. There is a great appreciation of new original plays in London and so we could not be more excited to introduce playwright Rob Askins and director Moritz von Stuelpnagel to British audiences. Also, we could not be more fortunate to be working with a cast of such incredibly talented West End regulars to bring this show to life."
Dee has won the Olivier Award, the Evening Standard Award and Critics Circle Awards for Best Actress in a Play, as well as the Obie and Theatre World Best Newcomer Award in New York, for her performance as Jacie Triplethree in Alan Ayckbourn's Comic Potential. She also received the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her performance as Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel at the National Theatre. In the last year she has appeared in a tour for Shakespeare's Globe, at the Young Vic and Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park.
Pearson was last seen in the West End in a revival of Stoppard's Arcadia in 2009. His many TV credits include "Rhodes," "The Magician's House," All the Small Things" and "Waterloo Road." Melling is best known playing Dudley Dursley Harry Potter's spoiled cousin in five of the "Harry Potter" films. He has appeared at the National in Mother Courage and her Children and Woman Beware Women, and in The Hothouse at Trafalgar Studios. He took his one-man show Peddling to 59E59 in New York.
Rooper was part of the original London and Broadway cast of One Man Two Guvnors and last appeared on the London stage in Blithe Spirit opposite Angela Lansbury. Other credits include Her Naked Skin at the National and Me and My Girl at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre.
Mines has appeared on TV in "Shetland," "Mountain Goats" and "Stonemouth." He has appeared in the West End in Million Dollar Quartet.
