Urban Stages has announced its 2016-17 season, which will kick off with the U.S. premiere of the award-winning Communion, by Canadian playwright Daniel MacIvor, who will also direct the production Off-Broadway this fall.

Communion, which explores the complexity of the mother-daughter relationship, religion and recovery, will make its debut September 30 with an opening night set for October 6.

“We are thrilled to bring Daniel MacIvor back to Urban Stages, his work is powerful, timely and a voice that New York needs to hear more of,” commented Urban Stages’ founding artistic director Frances Hill in a statement.

Here’s how the theatre bills the acclaimed work, which premiered at Canada’s Tarragon Theatre: “In Communion, Leda’s Born-Again daughter shouts a painful truth: ’People don’t have mothers like you.’ The distance between Leda and her daughter is filled with silence and anger. Upon the advice of a therapist dealing with her own host of troubles, Leda tries to bridge that distance and prepare her daughter for the calamity just ahead.”

Urban Stages also announced the return of its musical benefit series, Winter Rhythms, produced and programmed by Peter Napolitano. The series will run December 1-11.

The design and production team for Communion includes Deborah Constantine (lighting design), Ashley Gates (assistant to the director), Krystle Henninger (production stage manager), associate producer Peter Napolitano, development and literary director Antoinette Mullins and company manager/financial administrator Olga Devyatisilnaya. Casting for the production will be announced shortly.
