It is directed by Rupert Goold, whose productions of Macbeth starring Patrick Stewart and Enron both transferred to Broadway. Goold also conceived and developed it with Robert Icke. It is presented by Goold’s company Headlong Theatre in association with Chichester Festival Theatre.

According to press materials, the piece is  "an imaginative investigation into the legacy of 9/11. On Sept. 11, 2001, New York lived through a day, which supposedly changed the world forever.  Everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news.  9/11 was the first global event in the age of the internet and its fallout is felt daily by people on every continent.   Ten years on, Headlong, along with a team of major writers and thinkers, explore our responses to the defining event of our times."

The writing team comprises playwrights Christopher Shinn, Lynn Nottage (Pulitzer Prize winner for Ruined), John Logan (Tony Award winner for Red), Abi Morgan, Samuel Adamson, Mike Bartlett and Alecky Blythe, as well as historian and social commentator Simon Schama.

The ensemble cast includes Jonathan Bonnici, Leila Crerar, Kevin Harvey, Tom Hodgkins, Samuel James, Arinze Kene, Amy Lennox, Tobias Menzies, Claire Prempeh, Charlotte Randle, Cat Simmons and Emma Fielding (replacing the originally announced Lia Williams, who had to withdraw after having to undergo a minor hospital operation).
