Theatrical producer Bobby Garcia died December 17. News of his passing was confirmed by his representation. He was 55 years old.
Mr. Garcia was an award-winning director and producer across numerous international markets. As a director, he led 50 plays and musicals in Canada and throughout Asia, with major productions in mainland China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore.
In 1999, Mr. Garcia founded one of Asia’s most prolific theatre companies, Atlantis Productions/Atlantis Theatrical Group of Companies. He had an extensive working relationship with Lea Salonga, producing her concert and television specials Lea Salonga: 40, Lea Salonga: Playlist, Lea Salonga: Your Songs, Lea Salonga: The Broadway Concert, Lea Salonga: Songs From Home, Request sa Radyo, and Lea Salonga: Home For Christmas.
Mr. Garcia was an Associate Director for Miss Saigon in 2000 and 2001, and handled casting for Cameron Mackintosh in the Philippines for the revival of Miss Saigon and the U.K. Tour. In addition to his work with Mackintosh, Mr. Garcia was a casting consultant for the Broadway revival of M. Butterfly, the International Tour of Disney's The Lion King, and the London revival and tour of The King and I.
He served as Hong Kong Disneyland’s first show director, opening the park in 2005. He is the winner of three Aliw Awards for Direction (the premiere live entertainment award in the Philippines) and has been inducted into their Hall of Fame.
In 2023, Mr. Garcia co-produced and again served as a casting consultant for the Broadway run of Here Lies Love. Mr. Garcia was to have made his Stratford directorial debut in 2025.
