Disney, according to EW.com, is currently developing a live-action motion picture based on J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. David Lowery, who directed Disney's forthcoming remake of Pete's Dragon, will direct and co-write the script for this latest version of the classic tale of the motherless boy. Toby Halbrooks will co-write the screenplay; James Whitaker is producing.
No timetable or casting for the new film has been announced.
Barrie's flying Peter Pan has been the subject for innumerable projects, including Disney's 1953 animated film, the 1954 Broadway musical (starring Mary Martin) that was subsequently broadcast on TV as well as the more recent Peter Pan Live! (starring Allison Williams).
The new Broadway musical Finding Neverland, which continues at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, is billed as "The Story of How Peter Became Pan." Matthew Morrison originated the role of playwright Barrie in the Diane Paulus-directed production.
