Washington, D.C.'s Shakespeare Theatre Company has announced the lineup for its 2023-2024 season, titled Greater Wonders.

The season will open with a new production of Evita, directed by Sammi Cannold, who also helmed the New York City Center staging of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical. While the City Center cast will not continue with the production, Cannold intends to base her approach on the humanizing elements developed within that earlier production.

Says Cannold, “I hope when audiences see this play, they leave the theatre thinking, wondering, wanting to know more about the life of this mythical woman. She’s portrayed in some lights as this manipulative, wicked woman but she was so much more than that. I can’t wait to share her story with STC audiences.” This production will be produced in association with the American Repertory Theatre.

Obie winner Whitney White will bring her reexamination of Lady Macbeth, Macbeth in Stride, to the STC stage, fusing the classic story with music and an exploration of what it means to be an ambitious Black woman. Macbeth in Stride will be directed by Tyler Dobrowsky and Taibi Magar and is produced in association with Philadelphia Theatre Company.

The Bard on the Beach production of As You Like It, adapted and directed by Daryl Cloran, will sweep in during the holiday season, intermingling the music of The Beatles with the Bard's poetic lyricism as a reminder that in times of struggle, all you need is love. This will be followed by a second Shakespearean production, Macbeth, directed by STC Artistic Director Simon Godwin.

STC will also stage the D.C. premiere of The Lehman Trilogy as adapted by Ben Powers; a sixth play will be announced at a later date.

Performance dates and casting will be announced at a future time.
