Two Tony nominees and a Tony winner have boarded the upcoming Broadway premiere of Robert Schenkkan's The Great Society.
Emmy winner and Tony nominee Gordon Clapp (Glengarry Glen Ross, NYPD Blue) will play J. Edgar Hoover, with fellow Tony nominee Bryce Pinkham (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder) as Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Tony winner Frank Wood (Sideman, Network) as Senator Everett Dirksen. The trio joins the previously announced Brian Cox as Lyndon B. Johnson, Marc Kudisch as Richard J. Daley, Grantham Coleman as Martin Luther King Jr., and Richard Thomas as Hubert Humphrey.
The limited engagement, directed by Bill Rauch, will begin performances September 6 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. Additional casting will be announced later.
While Pulitzer winner Schnkkan's first LBJ play, All the Way, depicted Johnson’s year-long presidency in the aftermath of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, The Great Society picks up after his landslide victory in the 1964 election. The play explores his full four-year term against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and Civil Rights Movement.
