During an appearance September 13 on LIVE with Kelly, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt revealed that he is working on a movie musical with longtime pal and fellow actor Channing Tatum.

Tatum and Gordon-Levitt collaborated previously on three movies and were looking for another project to do together. That, combined with Gordon-Levitt’s snippet of a dance number in the 2009 indie flick 500 Days of Summer, led to discussions of a musical.

“After that number, people were like, ’Let's do a movie musical,’ and I wanted to, but I only wanted to do it if it was really the right thing,” Gordon-Levitt told Kelly Ripa and her co-host for the day, Michael Weatherly. Tatum and Gordon-Levitt started talking to a writer friend about what to work on. (This writer friend is presumably Michael Bacall, as Gordon-Levitt mentioned the writer was also the writer on Tatum’s 21 Jump Street and a fellow actor in the movie Manic.)

“So we were talking about: if you could do any movie, what would you do? And I was like, ‘I’ve always wanted to do a musical, and I want to do a movie with Chan. Let’s write a musical for me and Chan,’” said Gordon-Levitt.

Gordon-Levitt says to expect an R-rated musical comedy.

While Gordon-Levitt has been making movies for years, he fell in love with acting at a young age through community theatre, doing productions like Peter Pan, Guys and Dolls and Grease.

Gordon-Levitt has revealed some singing chops in performances with Lady Gaga and in promotions for 500 Days of Summer with his co-star in that film, Zooey Deschanel.

Tatum has been known for his dance moves since he splashed on the teen movie scene in Step Up, but recently learned to tap dance for his role in Hail, Caesar! choreographed by Broadway’s Christopher Gattelli.
