In the most coveted category of the evening, Kimberly Akimbo was named the Best Musical winner at the 76th Annual Tony Awards, held at the United Palace in Washington Heights June 11.
The musical, about a 16-year-old girl with a rare genetic disease that makes her look 72, had its world premiere Off-Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company in 2021, also directed by Jessica Stone. The complete cast from that run continued on for the Broadway bow. The work was adapted from David Lindsay-Abaire's play of the same name with a book and lyrics by Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori.
The big win made the production the most Tony-winning show of the night, also taking Best Book (Lindsay-Abaire), Score (Tesori and Lindsay-Abaire), Featured Actress (Bonnie Milligan), and Leading Actress (Victoria Clark).
"To my mother who inspired me and encouraged all my crazy dreams," said producer David Stone, accepting the award on stage. "Like Kimberly Levaco, she lived every moment of her life fully and completely, and I wish that for us all."
The production is directed by Jessica Stone, whose creative team also includes music director Chris Fenwick, orchestrator John Clancy (with additional orchestrations by Macy Schmidt), scenic designer David Zinn, costume designer Sarah Laux, lighting designer Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, sound designer Kai Harada, projection designer Lucy MacKinnon, and wig, hair, and make-up designer J. Jared Janas.
Producers for the Broadway production are David Stone, Atlantic Theater Company, James L. Nederlander, LaChanze, John Gore, Patrick Catullo, and Aaron Glick.
