Leopoldstadt took Best Play at the 76th Annual Tony Awards, held at the United Palace in Washington Heights June 11.
Set over several decades in Vienna, Austria, and following the lives of a singular extended family, Leopoldstadt explores the human condition and its resilience in the face of traumatic history before and after World War II.
The win is the production's fourth for the evening, after taking the categories of Best Costume Design of a Play for Brigitte Reiffenstuel, Featured Actor in a Play for Brandon Uranowitz, and Direction of a Play for Patrick Marber.
The award also makes Tom Stoppard the most Tony-winning playwright in history, having won previously for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Travesties, The Real Thing, and The Coast of Utopia. Stoppard was previously tied with the late Terrence McNally with his four wins over the Best Play and Best Book of a Musical categories.
Leopoldstadt features scenic design by Richard Hudson, Tony-winning costume design by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, lighting design by Neil Austin, and video design by Isaac Madge. Sound and original music are by Tony winner Adam Cork, and movement is by Emily Jane Boyle. Casting is by Jim Carnahan and Maureen Kelleher, and U.K. casting is by Amy Ball.
The play premiered in London in 2020 at the Wyndham Theatre, winning the Olivier for Best New Play. The production reunited Stoppard, Marber, and producer Sonia Friedman for the first time since collaborating on Travesties in 2017. Stoppard has previously had 18 plays staged on Broadway, beginning with his famous reimagining Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.
Leopoldstadt is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Roy Furman, and Lorne Michaels.
Others in the 2023 Best Play category included Ain't No Mo', Between Riverside and Crazy, Cost of Living, Fat Ham, and Leopoldstadt.
