Film & TV News Lorraine Hansberry Documentary Premieres January 19 on PBS Featuring interviews with Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, and more, the film dives into Hansberry’s life and art beyond A Raisin in the Sun.

When A Raisin in the Sun bowed on Broadway March 11, 1959, it was the first play written by an African-American woman to hit the Main Stem. The new documentary American Masters —Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart delves into her life and artistic contributions, including—and beyond—Raisin.

The documentary premieres January 19 on PBS at 9 PM ET and will be available to stream beginning January 20 on PBS apps and at PBS.org/American-Masters.

Narrated by LaTanya Richardson Jackson (Tony-nominated for her role as Lena Younger in the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun), the documentary from filmmaker Tracy Heather Strain debuted at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival. Tony winner Anika Noni Rose, who won for her performance in Caroline, or Change and earned a nomination for her work as Beneatha Younger in the same 2014 revival, provides the voice of Hansberry. The movie features interviews with Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Harry Belafonte, and Louis Gossett Jr.

Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart is produced by director Strain and Randall MacLowry. The film’s title is derived from a Hansberry quote: “One cannot live without sighted eyes and feeling heart and not know and react to the miseries, which afflict this world.“
