Tribeca Film Festival’s 2018 feature film lineup includes three documentaries with ties to the theatre community, as well as Michael Mayer and Stephen Karam’s adaptation of The Seagull. All four make their world premieres with the festival running April 18–29.
As previously announced, Mayer and Karam’s new take on the Chekhov classic will be released through Sony Pictures Classics May 11. The cast includes Oscar nominees Saoirse Ronan and Annette Bening as Nina and Arkadina, respectively, as well as Tony winner Brian Dennehy, Tony nominees Elisabeth Moss and Mare Winningham, and Corey Stoll.

The previously announced Terrence McNally documentary Every Act of Life, written and directed by Jeff Kaufman, is among the documentaries set for Tribeca’s Special Screenings series. The film follows the Tony-winning playwright over his five-decade career and life as an LGBT advocate and features appearances by Audra McDonald, F. Murray Abraham, Christine Baranski, Tyne Daly, Larry Kramer, Nathan Lane, Angela Lansbury, and more.
The Special Screenings lineup also includes Howard, a tribute to the late lyricist Howard Ashman. As reported last year, the documentary is spearheaded by Don Hahn, who produced Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, on which Ashman worked with his longtime collaborator Alan Menken.
Bathtubs Over Broadway, a documentary-comedy that explores the bizarre world of industrial musicals, will feature David Letterman, Chita Rivera, Susan Stroman, the late Florence Henderson, and Martin Short. Dava Whisenant directs. Steve Young first stumbled upon the fully produced musicals, which were created exclusively for corporations beginning in the ‘50s, as a writer for Letterman on The Late Show.
