New musical House of Cleopatra will play the Edinburgh Fringe this summer at Assembly Checkpoint.
Set to an original pop score, with lyrics by Laura Kleinbaum and Jeff Daye and music by Daye, the new musical dives into the story of one of history’s most famous rulers—and how the all-powerful queen became Egypt’s last pharaoh. Mixing historical drama with visual spectacle, the musical is being produced by Alchemation, the team behind Edinburgh's breakout hit SIX the Musical.
Said Daye, "We're thrilled to bring House of Cleopatra to Edinburgh, the original home of theatre that's also a good time. Cleopatra was the Queen B of her day, and she threw the most lavish parties the world had ever seen—and so what better place to invite you to one than at the Fringe? We can't wait to share Cleo's House of theatre, nightlife, pop-dance music, fashion, and drag with the U.K. audience."
Founded by Kevin McCollum (The Notebook, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Devil Wears Prada, SIX, Rent, Avenue Q, In the Heights) and Nathaniel Hill, Alchemation will also be producing The Book of Mountains and Seas at this year's Fringe. Playing Pleasance Courtyard, the Yilong Liu play centers on a grieving father who teams up with his late son's boyfriend to embark on a journey of discovery and understanding through the 179 restaurants that their lost love reviewed.
Casting and creative team members for both productions will be announced at a later date.
