New musical Fusong will have a private industry reading April 5 at New 42 Studios, presented by Lawrence Walker. The work, based on Geling Yan's novel The Lost Daughter of Happiness, is directed and conceived by Gabriel Barre.
Fusong centers on two young Chinese women in two different centuries, as Fusong is kidnapped from her small village in China and thrown into the dark world of San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1866, and Nancy confronts the anti-Asian hate crimes of America’s 21st century COVID era. The musical features a book and lyrics by Christine Toy Johnson and music by Cecilia Lin.
Performers for the reading will include Aaron Alcaraz, Colin Anderson, Stephen Bogardus, Delphi Borich, Emy Coligado, Amy Keum, Ryan Knowles, Angel Lin, Kelvin Moon Loh, Paul Heesang Miller, Jong Sang Rheu, Nathan Salstone, Jason Simon, Pearl Sun, and Xiaoqing Zhang.
The reading will feature music direction by Joshua Zecher-Ross, orchestrations and arrangements by Cecilia Lin, sound design by Connor Wang, casting by Michael Cassara and Andrea Zee, and general management by Visceral Entertainment. Ada Zhang serves as production stage manager alongside Kathleen Rose Gallardo as assistant stage manager.
