Playbill Celebrates Broadway's August Birthdays

Happy August, theatre fans!

It may be too darn hot for a lot of things, but not for celebrating the birthdays of some of our favorite Broadway stars. So, raise a piragua and toast these steamy summer babes as they spread their wings and take to the sky. This non-exhaustive list does not count all the Broadway stars in the night sky this August. Kicking off our month of birthdays is Mary-Louise Parker (How I Learned to Drive, The Sound Inside). Let's hope this Tony Award Winner is not feeling very cynical of the world on her August 2 birthday.

It's a Boy! Bobby Conte (The Who's Tommy, Company) and Ryan Steele (Once Upon a One More Time, MJ The Musical) want to be startin' something on their shared August 3 birthday.

These Broadway stars are celebrating their birthdays in summer August 6: Jelani Alladin (Frozen), Faith Prince (Disaster!, Annie), and Leslie Odom, Jr. (Purlie Victorious, Hamilton).

August 7 brings three sparkling diamonds: Alex Timbers (Here Lies Love, Gutenberg! The Musical!), KO (Moulin Rouge! The Musical, West Side Story), and Brenda Braxton (Chicago, Smokey Joe's Cafe).

Let's sing a Song of Love for Michael Urie (Once Upon a Mattress, Spamalot) on August 8 as he celebrates his birthday.

We'll be ringing The Bells of St. Sebastian on August 10 for Antonio Banderas' (Nine) birthday.

May good fortune attend David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly, Yellow Face) and Viola Davis (Fences, King Hedley II) on their August 11 birthday.

On August 12, attention must be paid to Olivier winner and Tony nominee Sharon D Clarke (Caroline, Or Change; Death of a Salesman).

Wesley Taylor (SpongeBob SquarePants, The Addams Family) will be doing the Bikini Bottom Boogie on August 13.

On August 14, we'll be thinking of one of Broadway's brightest: Sarah Brightman, who originated the role of Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera.

Alex Newell may be "independently owned and operated," but we want to make sure they're incandescently throned and celebrated like the QUEEN they are. The history-making Tony winner was born August 20. This is also a day on which the world will only spin forward for Andrew Garfield (Angels in America, Death of a Salesman).

Suddenly, Robin de Jesús (The Boys in the Band, La Cage aux Folles) is having a birthday. The three-time Tony nominee blows out his candles August 21. Loretta Devine (Dreamgirls, Hair) is also a Big Deal on this day.

Fan-favorite chorine Amber Ardolino (Funny Girl, A Beautiful Noise) has swung onstage for the founding of America, the Ziegfeld follies, and a Parisian can-can. Now she's Back to the Future and celebrating her birthday on August 22.

Stop the Press and salute Andrew Rannells (Gutenberg! The Musical!, The Boys in the Band) on August 23.

You've got 24 hours to celebrate the August 24 birthday of downtown theatre provocateur Taylor Mac (Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus), whose Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is currently dazzling Chicago audiences.

August 25 is a hit for our old friends Blair Underwood (Pass Over, A Soldier's Play), Tom Hollander (Travesties), Katie Rose Clarke (Merrily We Roll Along, Miss Saigon), and Ato Blankson-Wood (Cabaret, Slave Play).

We're giving a ball for Keke Palmer (Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella) on her August 26 birthday.

Let's hope there will be sun on August 28, Andy Karl's (Pretty Woman: The Musical) special day. Karl will next be seen in the hit horror musical Teeth.

We'll be using The Big Knife to cut Marin Ireland's (Reasons to Be Pretty) cake on August 30. Ireland has written a play, Pre-Existing Condition, which is running Off-Broadway now.

Two-time nominee and Broadway's favorite Pops, Stephen McKinley Henderson (Between Riverside and Crazy, Fences) closes out the month of celebrations with his August 31 birthday, which he shares with Broadway's Lady of the Lake Sara Ramirez (Spamalot, A Class Act).
