NYU Skirball has unveiled its 2018–2019 season, a multi-genre slate of works that includes a Karl Max festival, a number of marathon performances, dance premieres, and a month-long 50th anniversary celebration of the Stonewall Uprising featuring special events, marches, panels, and premieres.
Kicking off the season September 8 will be an overnight storytelling marathon of And on the Thousandth Night, inspired by Tales of the Arabian Nights, from experimental British company Forced Entertainment. The company will also present a six-night retelling of the entire Shakespeare canon using everyday household objects as stand-ins for the famed heroes and heroines (a salt and pepper shaker for the king and queen). Performances will run September 11–16.
Other marathon performances slated for the season include the New York City premiere of Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane Company’s marathon dance piece Analogy Trilogy (September 22–23) and a return engagement of Elevator Repair Service’s award-winning Gatz, based on The Great Gatsby. The eight-hour theatrical reading of the classic novel (including two intermissions and a dinner break) will play eight marathon performances at NYU Skirball beginning January 23, 2019.
Also beginning in January will be NYU Skirball’s Stonewall 50, commemorating the anniversary of the landmark uprising. The lineup of performances includes the American premieres of Briefs: The Second Coming, an all-male, gender-bending burlesque show from Australia (January 6–7), and National Theatre of Scotland’s Adam, the true story of a transgender man’s struggle against Egyptian oppression, featuring a virtual choir of trans and non-binary individuals from across the world (February 14–16).
The season will showcase artists across theatre, dance, music, and film, from Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Indonesia, The Netherlands, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, Switzerland, Tonga, the U.K., Uruguay, and the U.S., and will include five world premieres, five American premieres, and seven New York premieres.
