Additional casting has been announced for MasterVoices' concert presentation of Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents' Anyone Can Whistle, which will be presented March 10 at 7 PM at Carnegie Hall.
Joining the previously announced Tony, Emmy, and Grammy nominee Vanessa Williams as Cora Hoover Hooper will be
Tony winner Santino Fontana (Tootsie) as J. Bowden Hapgood, Tony nominee Elizabeth Stanley (Jagged Little Pill) as Fay Apple, Tony nominee Douglas Sills (The Scarlet Pimpernel) as Comptroller Schub, Eddie Cooper (Assassins) as Treasurer Cooley, and Tony nominee Michael Mulheren (Kiss Me, Kate) as Police Chief Magruder.
MasterVoices Artistic Director Ted Sperling will direct and conduct the political satire with choreography by JoAnn M. Hunter, lighting design by Aaron Tacy, sound design by Marc Salzberg, and costumes coordinated by Tracy Christensen.
With a score by Sondheim and a book by Laurents, Anyone Can Whistle opened at the Majestic Theatre April 4, 1964, with a cast led by multi-Tony winner Angela Lansbury, Lee Remick, Harry Guardino, Gabriel Dell, Arnold Soboloff, James Frawley, Peg Murray, Don Doherty, Sterling Clark, Harvey Evans, Larry Roquemore, and Tucker Smith. Although the political satire played but 21 performances, the Sondheim score contained several exceptional songs, including “Me and My Town,” “There Won’t Be Trumpets,” “Anyone Can Whistle,” “Everybody Says Don’t,” and “With So Little to Be Sure Of.”
A London revival will be presented in April at the Southwark Playhouse.
Director-conductor Sperling said in a statement, "MasterVoices mourns the recent passing of the irreplaceable Stephen Sondheim. Steve was a friend, a great colleague, and a mentor. He was delighted we were revisiting Anyone Can Whistle, which has one of his favorite songs, ‘With So Little to Be Sure Of,’ and he had agreed to help us with the project. The month ahead will be a labor of love, and we know his spirit will be with us as we bring his and Arthur's work back to the stage."
