The 2024 Native Son 101 List has been released, and there are a number of familiar theatre faces on display!

Native Son, a content and storytelling platform for Black gay and queer men, has published the annual list since 2020. Recognizing a variety of Black gay and queer men who have created impact throughout the year, the 101 List shines a light on leaders, mavericks and innovators who achieved unprecedented cultural heights and historic firsts, and those who are using their platforms to break through barriers in their respective roles, professions, and areas of expertise.

Present on this year's list are a number of creatives in the theatre and dance world, including two-time Tony winning choreographer, director, dancer and writer Bill T. Jones; principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre Calvin Royal; the ensemble cast of Cats: The Jellicle Ball; Tony and Emmy winning costume designer Paul Tazewell (Wicked); Jonathan McCory, executive artistic director of the National Black Theatre; internet personality, host, and actor Kalen Allen who made his Broadway debut in Elf The Musical; Emmy nominated actor Tituss Burgess; and Tony nominee Colman Domingo.

“We created the first Native Son 101 list in 2020 as reaction to the racial backlash from the murder of George Floyd and the great LGBTQ+ identity revolution. There were so many Black gay/queer men who were having impact globally, but weren’t being recognized by mainstream media,” said Emil Wilbekin, Founder of Native Son. “We wanted to shine a spotlight on these champions, way makers, and innovators. We wanted to speak their names and represent them as works of art so that their legacies would be remembered, recognized, and revered. Unlike the Native Son Awards, the 101 List isn’t just about career achievements, but also uplifts people who have made a difference and had impact in their community, industry, or profession in this calendar year. It’s their moment to shine!”
