After bringing the John Carney-directed Once to the New York stage in 2011, New York Theatre Workshop will present a stage adaptation of another indie movie musical. The Off-Broadway company’s 2019–2020 season will include Sing Street, based on Carney’s 2016 film.
Indecent Tony Award winner Rebecca Taichman will direct the production, which will also feature choreography by Sonya Tayeh (Broadway’s upcoming Moulin Rouge!). Enda Walsh, who earned a Tony Award for Once’s Broadway bow, will collaborate with Carney once again to pen the book.
The film uses songs by Carney and Gary Clark (who team up for the new adaptation) to tell the Dublin 1985-set story about a teenage boy who forms a band to impress a mysterious girl.
The staging will have orchestrations by Martin Lowe, costumes and sets by Bob Crowley, lighting design by Christopher Akerlind, and sound design by Darron L. West.
The season, as previously reported, will first kick off in the fall with the New York premiere of NYTW Usual Suspect Mfoniso Udofia’s double bill of runboyrun and In Old Age (directed by Loretta Greco and Awoye Timpo, respectively). The two pieces are part of the playwright’s nine-part Ufot Cycle (following her earlier chapters Sojourners and Her Portmanteau), centered around the matriarch of a Nigerian family.
Pulitzer Prize winner and NYTW veteran Martyna Majok will later return to the venue with Sanctuary City, directed by Rebecca Frecknall. The play, initially set to premiere in the current season before being moved to 2019–2020, explores various relationships impacted by the weight of responsibility of young DREAMers in the U.S.Additional titles will be announced at a later date.
