Mark MacKillop is a familiar name within the theatre community when it comes to fundraising efforts and the call to action to end stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS. In today’s episode of Storytellers, Mark shares how growing up in a generation where many gay men’s lives were lost to an epidemic. Seeing older gay men have their lives cut short created a sense of anxiety and uncertainty about his own future.
“I think it’s important that we keep the memory of the people we lost alive but also to end the stigma of HIV and AIDS. People know that so that I’ve spent the last 10 years of my life raising money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. I’m very passionate about it, and this year I think I raised $600,000 for them. It’s just become a big part of my life being able to help people who need the help. That’s important to me.”
Storytellers is available on Playbill and Playbill's YouTube channel, both including a donation button inviting viewers to contribute to Broadway Cares, which works to provide meals, medication, healthcare, and hope for those in need across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C. The video series and the live kick-off event are made possible by premier sponsor Gilead Sciences and in part by the Michelangelo Hotel.
The new musical is celebrating the box office opening at the Nederlander with an offer for fans to get $20 tickets, harkening back to Rent's first-of-its-kind ticket lottery.
