The new musical comedy Upside Down will have its Off-Broadway premiere at AMT Theater March 7-April 5, 2025. Taavon Gamble, who was previously announced as the production's director, will now serve as choreographer as well.
With music and lyrics by Al Tapper and a book by AMT Artistic Director Tony Sportiello, Upside Down was inspired by a recent Gallup poll, which found that 92.4 percent of the surveyed U.S population identified as straight, while the rest considered themselves part of the LGBTQIA+ community. The musical comedy turns that number around, creating a world where straight people are the minority. Jack and Robert are two mainstream gay songwriters whose dream is to have a Broadway show, and decide to create the world's first-ever straight musical.
"Upside Down tells a story that, although is entertaining, flips the script a bit to show a reality that many people live every day from a different lens,” Gamble said in a statement. “From the first few pages of the script, I knew I wanted to collaborate with this award-winning theatre team and be a part of bringing this musical comedy to the stage. With a bit of humor, fantastic storytelling, and the talent our cast and crew will exude, this production is going to be one you won’t want to miss.”
"Taavon’s extensive experience as not only a director, but a choreographer and actor, gives him a unique perspective that we immediately knew would take this show to the next level,” added Tapper. “He’s able to see the production with a creative eye from different angles, providing support to the team across the board, to give us just what we need to take our vision for Upside Down and make it a reality.”
Casting will be announced at a later date.
