Off-Broadway News Upside Down Sets Off-Broadway Run at AMT Theater

The new comedy features music and lyrics by Al Tapper, with a book by Tony Sportiello.

The new musical comedy Upside Down will have its Off-Broadway premiere at AMT Theater beginning March 7, 2025. The work features music and lyrics by Al Tapper, with a book by AMT Artistic Director Tony Sportiello. Taavon Gamble will direct.

Upside Down was inspired by a recent Gallup poll, which found that 92.4 percent of the surveyed U.S population identified as straight, while the rest considered themselves part of the LGBTQIA+ community. The musical comedy turns that number around, creating a world where straight people are the minority. Jack and Robert are two mainstream gay songwriters whose dream is to have a Broadway show, and decide to create the world's first-ever straight musical.

"When I first read the script for Upside Down, I was so intrigued with the story and jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the team,” Gamble said in a statement.

“Social commentary aside, Al and I are storytellers first and foremost,” added Sportiello. "... [T]his is about what it feels like to be on the outside looking in, but it also has to be funny.”

Casting will be announced at a later date.
