The Banks family and Mary Poppins are heading back to the big screen—this time, with Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive first look of Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, including photos from the set of the cast in action. Take a look above at Emily Blunt as the titular whimsical nanny and Miranda as Jack the lamplighter with the new generation of Banks children in the musical number “Trip a Little Light Fantastic.”
The sequel picks up 25 years after the first film, as Mary Poppins returns to Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane to find Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) and his three children mourning the sudden loss of his wife. It’s up to her to bring light back into their lives, through a whimsical trip around London and beyond.
“The bar is so high for this,” director Rob Marshall told EW. “But to be able to walk in the footsteps of this beautiful story about a woman who brings magic to this family that’s looking for wonder and hope and joy in their lives…. I feel a great responsibility and reverence every day.”
The cast also features Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Meryl Streep, and Angela Lansbury, as well as original Mary Poppins star Dick Van Dyke. The film, featuring a new score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, will be released Christmas Day 2018.
