The Civilians' 2024 gala, titled A Novel Reality, will honor actor Quincy Tyler Bernstine and playwright Anne Washburn as "Civilians of the Year" May 13. The event will be held at 6:30 PM at City Winery NYC.
Bernstine just completed a run as Mrs. Muller in Roundabout Theatre Company's Doubt on Broadway. Previous credits include In the Next Room on Broadway, and numerous productions with The Civilians. Washburn's plays include The Internationalist, Apparition, The Communist Dracula Pageant, and more.
The pair previously collaborated on The Civilians' commission Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play, which Washburn wrote, with Bernstine featured in the cast. The original company will reunite for benefit concert readings June 1 and 2, held on the Mainstage at Playwrights Horizons, where the production made its New York premiere.
“Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Anne Washburn have had an outsize impact on the American theatre,” The Civilians Artistic Director Steve Cosson said in a statement. “Each of them is a singular artist, and each has a special relationship with The Civilians, which collided in our beloved production of Mr. Burns. I am honored and thrilled to celebrate them both at this year’s gala.”
The gala will feature performances and appearances by Bernstine, Colleen Werthmann, Gibson Frazier, Jennifer Morris, Sam Breslin Wright, Nedra Marie Taylor, Vaibu Mahon, Eric Parker, Mike Cefalo, Paul Speiser, Nina Hellman, Maria Striar, Alison Weller, Heath Saunders, Michael Castillejos, Robert Johanson, Brittany K.
