Regional News The Lehman Trilogy to Close Out The Huntington's 2022-2023 Season

The Boston theatre's production replaces the previously scheduled Bhangin' It: A Bangin' New Musical.

The Huntington will close out its current season with a new, non-replica production of 2022 Best Play Tony winner The Lehman TrilogyThe production, set to run June 13-July 16, will be the first major staging created by an American theatre company.

Carey Perloff (Rock ‘n’ RollMary Stuart) will direct the the play, written by Stefano Massini and adapted by Ben PowerThe Lehman Trilogy chronicles the success and eventual failure of the famed financial institution. 

Artistic Director Loretta Greco said in a statement, “It is both a staggering, highly entertaining work of the imagination and an uncomfortable and deeply complicated slice of our American history." To address critiques of how the play addresses the brothers' de factor ownership of enslaved Black Americans and the lacking representation of African American experiences, The Huntington will present a series of events and discussions to be announced at a later date.

The Lehman Trilogy replaces Bhangin’ It: A Bangin’ New Musical which was originally scheduled for this December, and then postponed to summer 2023 due to a manufacturing delay which affects The Huntington Theatre's renovation and its new automated rigging system.

The Broadway run of The Lehman Trilogy ended its run at the Nederlander Theatre this past January. It originally premiered at London’s National Theatre in 2018, made its North American debut at the Park Avenue Armory in 2019, and subsequently played the West End where it will soon play a return engagement. In addition to Best Play, The Lehman Trilogy also won Tony Awards for Mendes, Clark, Devlin, and original London company member Simon Russell Beale, who won the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play Tony for his work as Henry Lehman.

The Lehman Trilogy will also grace the silver screen as a television adaptation directed by Florian Zeller (The SonThe Father).
