Regional News Boston’s Huntington Theatre Postpones Bhangin’ It: A Bhangin’ New Musical

The theatre’s extensive renovation has thrown a wrench in the musical’s plans.

Bhangin’ It: A Bhangin’ New Musical’s previously announced [link] run at Boston’s Huntington Theatre will be postponed due to a manufacturing delay. Previously scheduled for December 4–January 8, 2023, the co-production with La Jolla Playhouse has been rescheduled to close out the Boston theatre’s 2022–23 season next summer. New dates will be announced at a later date.

As Huntington Theatre carries out an extensive renovation, the manufacturing of “a critical electronic component required for the new automated rigging system” has resulted in the need to delay the show according to the theatre, which also cites the current global chip shortage as causing the delay.

Bhangin’ It features a book by Mike Lew and Rehana Lew Mirza, with music and lyrics by Sam Willmott and additional music by Deep Singh. Stafford Arima directs the production about college senior Mary Darshini Clarke who captains a novice Bhangra team ahead of the national intercollegiate competition.

“In spite of the supply chain challenges, we are thrilled to be able to close our season with the extraordinary new musical Bhangin’ It,” says new Artistic Director Loretta Greco. “I adore this incredible team of artists and can’t wait to share this incomparable theatrical event with the city of Boston.”

The previously announced runs of Broadway-bound musical Sing Street and August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone will be staged as planned.
