Wicked is continuing to dominate awards season, picking up five SAG Award nominations—including the top prize, Best Cast—when nominations were announced January 8. Winners will be named at Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall February 23 in a ceremony that will stream live globally on Netflix.
The screen version of the Broadway musical was nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category alongside the companies of A Complete Unknown (which includes Broadway alum Norbert Leo Butz, Elle Fanning, and Dan Fogler), Anora, Conclave (which includes stage favorites Ralph Fiennes and John Lithgow), and fellow movie musical Emilia Pérez. The film also got nominations in Leading Female Actor, for Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba; Supporting Male Actor, for Jonathan Bailey's Fiyero; Supporting Female Actor, for Ariana Grande's Glinda; and Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.
Stage names also picking up nominations this year included Colman Domingo, in Leading Male Actor for Sing Sing; soon-to-be Glengarry Glen Ross star Kieran Culkin, in Supporting Male Actor for A Real Pain; Jeremy Strong, in the same category for The Apprentice; Kevin Kline, in Leading Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for Disclaimer; Cristin Milioti, in Leading Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for The Penguin; Eddie Redmayne, in Leading Male Actor in a Drama Series for The Day of the Jackal; Allison Janney, in Leading Female Actor in a Drama Series for The Diplomat; Martin Short, in Leading Male Actor in a Comedy Series for Only Murders in the Building; Kristen Bell, for Leading Female Actor in a Comedy Series for Nobody Wants This; Liza Colón-Zayas, for Leading Female Actor in a Comedy Series for The Bear; and Jean Smart, for Leading Female Actor in a Comedy Series for Hacks.
TV ensemble categories also included nominations for the stage star-loaded casts of Bridgerton (Julie Andrews and Jonathan Bailey) and Only Murders in the Building (Richard Kind, Steve Martin, Molly Shannon, and Martin Short).
Wicked, which won the Box Office Achievement Golden Globe Award January 5, has already been named Best Film of the year by the National Review Board, and is increasingly being seen as a real contender for Best Picture prizes across many film award systems, including the Academy Awards. Those nominations are due January 17.
