BREAKDOWN

BEFORE THIS NEW YEAR

SYNOPSIS: Alison and Haley were not only best friends but something more - until everything came crashing down. Over the holiday season, Alison is forced to confront Haley, her past, and the choices that shattered both their running careers and their relationship. Set against the backdrop of today's high-pressure world, BEFORE THIS NEW YEAR is a sharp, funny, and brutally honest exploration of love, loss, identity, and the complex process of coming of age.

SEEKING:

[ALISON] 18-year-old BIPOC female. Disciplined, high-achieving, guarded and vulnerable. She has a smart sense of humor and can be fiery and mischievous, but she is also super type A. Alison was a high school track star who always excelled until an altercation halted her ambition to go to an ivy league school and pursue an elite running career.

[HALEY] 18-19-year-old white female. Free-spirited and self-assured, she is the effortlessly attractive “it-girl” though she’s not stereotypical in any way. Very warm, likable, and magnetic, she can be vulnerable but has a true inner strength. While home from college on break, Haley yearns to reestablish a connection with her former high school best friend and confidante Alison.

[MOM aka MRS. BENNETT] 40s–60 BIPOC female. Alison’s mom, she is animated and energetic, like an engine that never runs out of steam. Though she may seem somewhat overbearing to Alison, she is truly well-intentioned and fiercely loyal to her daughter and only wants the very best for her. Will double as various ensemble roles.

[COACH FINLEY] 40s-early 50s white male. Haley’s dad, he is a celebrated high school track coach that can be domineering in his need for success. He puts intense pressure on the whole team but especially on his daughter, making their relationship fraught with tension. He tends to lose control of his emotions when he’s under stress and it is clear that he had an outsized impact on his daughter’s best friend and his star athlete Alison.

[BRANDON] 22-year-old BIPOC male. Charming, smart, and sensitive. Brandon is an attractive, nerdy recent college graduate who takes an interest in Alison when he meets her at her work.

[JEN] 20-year-old female. Any ethnicity. Stunning and sickeningly sweet. A college classmate of Haley’s, Jen is queen bee of their sorority. Will double as various ensemble roles.

[UNDERSTUDY FOR ALISON/JEN] 18-20-year-old BIPOC female.

[UNDERSTUDY FOR HALEY] 18-19-year-old white female.

[UNDERSTUDY FOR MOM aka MRS. BENNETT] 40s-60 BIPOC female.

[UNDERSTUDY FOR COACH FINLEY] 40s-early50s white male.

[UNDERSTUDY FOR BRANDON] 22-year-old BIPOC male.
