BREAKDOWN
LETTER
SYNOPSIS:
Letter is a solo play about Shin, a Japanese school teacher and gay porn actor, who writes a letter to his mother while on a plane to Los Angeles. As he pens his thoughts, Shin reflects on his journey—his struggles with meeting his mother’s expectations, the conflict between his sense of duty and his own desire.
Through conversations with his mother in the letter, Letter reveals Shin’s gradual acceptance of his true identity and his complex with her.
Trigger Warning:
Sexual assault, Sexual content
Run Time:
25-30 minutes
SEEKING:
[SHIN] CAST: Male, early 30s, Japanese or of any Asian descent, strong monologue skills. Japanese-speaking skills aren't required.
Shin grew up believing that love must be earned by meeting expectations, shaped by his mother’s conservative upbringing. At the same time, he has an endearing charm and the ability to infuse humor into even the serious moments.
Through this performance at this festival, we plan to develop this piece into a full-length musical/play in the future. We are looking for a collaborator who is interested in supporting the development of new work.
