ABOUT SIGNATURE THEATRE

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director, the Lead Carpenter serves as a key member of the Production Department Staff. The Lead Carpenter leads union overhire and staff, including 3 full-time hourly staff carpenters, in the construction, assembly, and loading/unloading of all scenic elements and assists the Assistant Technical Director in supervising the shop floor. This is a full-time, hourly position. Signature produces about 6-8 full-scale company productions and several additional one-off stage productions annually.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Assist the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director in leading the shop staff and union overhire in the construction, assembly, load in, and load out of scenery.

· Oversee and direct the shop staff in specific projects to ensure scenic designs are executed accurately.

· Provide instruction and guidance to shop staff on wood working and metal working techniques, and on scenic carpentry and safety best practices.

· Handle high detail projects at the direction of the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director.

· Keep the scene shop clean and orderly while maintaining material and hardware inventory. Assist the Deck Chief in keeping the theaters in a similar state.

· Assist the Deck Chief in maintenance and upkeep of productions and their artistic and technical values.

· Other duties as assigned.

ASSIGNED MEETINGSAND REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Lead Carpenter must attend all assigned production meetings and company-wide meetings. This position reports directly to the Technical Director, with additional reporting to the Assistant Technical Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

· 2+ years managing or working in a professional theatrical scene shop is strongly preferred.

· OSHA 10 or 30 preferred.

· Exceptional organizational and communication skills.

· Familiarity with welding and rigging is strongly preferred.

· Comfort driving an 18’ box truck is preferred.

· Ability to work collaboratively with Production colleagues to create a healthy, hard-working, team-oriented environment.

WORKING REQUIREMENTS

· Employee must be able to lift 50 pounds unaided and in repetition, move around an office and shop, and frequently ascend/descend ladders or steps.

· Will be frequently exposed to the following shop conditions among others: loud noises, working at heights, in confined spaces, and in adverse weather/temperatures.

· Working hours are typically 7am-4pm, with some weeks prior to and including technical rehearsals for mainstage productions requiring 50- to 60-hour work weeks, including nights and weekends.

· Employee must maintain a safe and orderly working environment.

· This position is based at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The full-time Lead Carpenter position offers an hourly rate of $25.25 per hour, with overtime paid in accordance with the Signature-Local 22 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Signature offers a competitive benefits package for all full-time employees that includes the following:
