BREAKDOWN

The Wild Duck

Text: Henry Ibsen

“A new version by” David Eldridge

Director: Simon Godwin

Actors are encouraged to audition for whatever role(s) they wish.

SEEKING:

Hakon Werle – Sixties, a tough businessman, uncompromising and high status.

Gregers Werle – His son. Late thirties/early forties – the force of change in the play – fiery, uncompromising, with a dangerous charm and piercing sense of righteousness. Edgy.

Old Ekdal – Sixties, a broken former military man who has been reduced to a inhibited life after being accused of legal wrongdoing. A kind man with traces of being a soldier.

Hjalmar Ekdal - His son. Late thirties/early forties. A man of high hopes and bold dreams but crippled by a sense of social inferiority. A dreamer, emotional and highly strung. Heartfelt, determined yet carrying a vulnerability.

Gina Ekdal – His wife. Last thirties/early forties. Capable, with a deep strength. A passionate mother and matriarch who is determined to defend her life and its complex foundations.

Hedwig – Their daughter. Fourteen. Awkward, loving, emotional, and losing her sight. The febrile heart of the play.

Mrs. Sorby – The housekeeper and fiancée of Hakon Werle. Late fifties/early sixties. A big presence – practical and of the countryside - but now enjoying her elevated status. There is an edge of glamour to her and of, finally, making good by her imminent marriage.

Relling – A doctor. Late fifties/early sixties. Forthright, jovial, and unafraid to speak his mind. He was once tied romantically to Mrs. Sorby. Now the only one brave enough to stand up to Gregers.

Pettersen – A servant to Hakon Werle. Could be a man or woman in their twenties, thirties of forties.

Jensen – a hired waiter. A man in their thirties or forties.

Captain Balle - a dinner guest,

Mr Flor - a dinner guest.

DOUBLING:

Relling and Captain Balle will be doubled.
