The 92NY Unterberg Poetry Center’s 84th season will continue February 6 at 7:30 PM with a celebration of the works of the Tony-winning Broadway playwright John Guare.
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, who is producing the event at the Manhattan venue, says, “So enormous is the esteem in which I hold the Great Guare and his monumentally important body of work. Like Williams, he figured out a way for Americans to do a kind of stage poetry. There are astonishingly beautiful things in his plays.”
Guare's theatrical works include Two Gentlemen of Verona, Lydie Breeze, Four Baboons Adoring the Sun, A Free Man of Color, Six Degrees of Separation, Sweet Smell of Success, The House of Blue Leaves, and Landscape of the Body.
The production will include Bernstein’s incidental music for Lillian Hellman’s adaptation of The Lark, and Menotti’s The Unicorn, The Gorgon, and The Manticore.
Based on the novel and film by Frank Cottrell Boyce, the new musical will reunite Guettel with Tony-winning Light in the Piazza director Bartlett Sher.
