Avoid the harsh winter weather and curl up on the couch with our TV and movie picks for theatre lovers. This month’s offerings include theatre stars teaming up in Pam & Tommy and Patsy and Lynn, as well as the return of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Proud Family.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (February 18)
Rachel Brosnahan returns as housewife-turned-stand-up-comedian Midge Maisel for the fourth season of the Emmy Award-winning dramedy. She’s joined by a supporting cast of theatre favorites, including Jane Lynch, Tony Shalhoub, Marin Hinkle, Michael Zegen, and Caroline Aaron. Tony nominee Gideon Glick will guest star in a multi-episode arc.

Patsy and Loretta
Megan Hilty and Jessie Mueller are Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn in this Lifetime movie about the friendship between the two legendary country-music stars. The film features musical performances of some of Cline’s and Lynn’s hits, including “Crazy” and “Honky Tonk Girl.”

Inventing Anna (February 11)
Based on real events (and a popular The Cut article by Jessica Pressler), the Netflix limited series follows the fraudster who pretended to be a German heiress and scammed hotels, restaurants, and a private jet operator out of approximately $275,000. Julia Garner plays the titular criminal in a cast featuring Anna Chlumsky, Katie Lowes, Anna Deavere Smith, and James Cusati-Moyer.

Network
The 1976 movie, written by playwright Paddy Chayefsky and directed by Sidney Lumet, stars Faye Dunaway as a television producer willing to exploit the ravings of deranged former anchorman Howard Beale, played by Peter Finch. Ivo van Hove directed a stage adaptation of the show that premiered in London in 2017 before transferring to Broadway a year later. Bryan Cranston won his second Tony Award for his portrayal of Howard Beale.

Nightmare Alley (Also on Hulu)
Guillermo del Toro directs the second film adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s novel about a carnival worker who plans to con a dangerous tycoon with the help of a mysterious psychiatrist. Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette, and William Defoe star in this film, which will be available on Hulu and HBO Max on February 1. Gresham’s novel has inspired a stage musical.

Sweeney Todd
Tim Burton, one of cinema’s favorite gothic-horror directors, took on Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s gothic-horror musical masterpiece. Burton regulars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter star as Sweeney Todd and his accomplice Mrs. Lovett in a notably gorier take on the operatic musical’s story of murder, revenge, and, of course, cannibalism. Broadway and West End favorite Laura Michelle Kelly co-stars as the Beggar Woman in this 2007 adaptation.

West Side Story (1961)
Before Steven Spielberg adapted Tony and Maria’s love story into a cinematic masterpiece, Jerome Robbins did. Natalie Wood and Richard Beymar play star-crossed lovers in the first screen adaptation of Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, and Stephen Sondheim’s musical update of Romeo and Juliet. The movie won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and statuettes for Robbins and supporting actors Rita Moreno and George Chakiris.

Uprooted: The Journey of Jazz Dance
This new documentary traces the origin of jazz in Africa and follows its evolution through each decade and genre while exploring and commenting on the political and social influences that shaped the artistry of today. It’s an honest conversation about jazz dance that addresses topics such as appropriation, racism, socialism, and sexism. Debbie Allen, George Faison, Chita Rivera, Graciela Daniele, Camille A. Brown, and Thomas F. DeFrantz make special appearances.

Clue
Jonathan Lynn’s 1985 whodunit blends intrigue and comedy as six blackmail victims, played by Christopher Lloyd, Madeline Kahn, Michael McKean, Lesley Ann Warren, Eileen Brennan, and Martin Mull, attend a dinner party and try to figure out who killed the host. Based on the popular board game, the film itself has been turned into a very successful stage play by Sandy Rustin, with additional material by Hunter Foster and Eric Price.

The Preacher’s Wife
One woman struggles to find her voice and strengthen her preacher husband in this movie-with-music starring Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington. The supporting cast includes stage favorites Loretta Devine, Jenifer Lewis, and Tony winners Courtney B. Vance and Gregory Hines. The film has also inspired an in-development stage musical.

What’s Love Got to Do With It?
In honor of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical’s Broadway run, stream this 1993 biopic of the famous singer. Angela Bassett stars as Tina Turner alongside Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner. Stage favorite Jenifer Lewis also appears as Tina’s mother, Zelma.

Downton Abbey
Prepare for the sequel film Downton Abbey: A New Era by streaming the original hit TV show. The historical drama follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants and features a cast stacked with theatre favorites, including Maggie Smith, Lesley Nicol, Penelope Wilton, and Dan Stevens.

Black Swan
Natalie Portman plays ballet dancer Nina in this psychological thriller about the mental and emotional tolls of art. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film revolves around a production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and features Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder, and a performance by former New York City Ballet principal dancer Benjamin Millepied.

Pam & Tommy (February 2)
Pamela Anderson and drummer Tommy Lee’s sex tape is leaked online in this biographical miniseries directed by I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie. Lily James and Sebastian Stan, who play Pam and Tommy, respectively, both have theatrical pedigrees. Lily James was most recently seen as Eve in All About Eve on the West End, while Stan appeared in the most recent Broadway revivals of both Talk Radio and Picnic.

Maurice Hines: Bring Them Back
Dancer and Tony nominee Maurice Hines sits down to discuss his lengthy career, which includes Broadway shows, a co-starring role in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Cotton Club, and his relationship with his brother, the late Gregory Hines. The film features interviews with Chita Rivera and Debbie Allen, among others.

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder (February 23)
The beloved titular family of Disney Channel’s 2001 animated series The Proud Family is back and louder than ever. The reboot picks up where the original left off and follows Penny Proud as she navigates young adulthood. The supporting cast features Billy Porter and Zachary Quinto as a married couple with an adopted daughter voiced by Keke Palmer. Guest stars include Jane Lynch, Leslie Odom Jr., Debbie Allen, Courtney B. Vance, Glynn Turman, and Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris.
