Making its co-world premiere, Candrice Jones' Flex plays Balzer Theater at Herren's in Atlanta, Georgia September 7-October 2. Theatrical Outfit presents the basketball-themed work to launch its 2022-2023 season.
Set in 1997 Arkansas, Flex follows Plainnole's Lady Train basketball team, who dream of going pro in the game-changing WNBA. But the team of young players face pressures they must navigate of what it means to be young, Black, and female in the rural South.
The cast of six stars Hailey Elizabeth as Starra Jones, Andrea Gooden as Coach Francine Pace, Kenisha Johnson as Sidney Brown, Whitney Nelson as Donna Cunningham, India S. Tyree as Cherise Howard, and Aminah Williams as April Jenkins.
“Though set in the '90s, there is a lot about this play that could have been pulled right from today’s headlines,” said artistic director Matt Torney in a statement. “From uncertainty around the repeal of Roe v. Wade to Brittany Griner showing the true cost of pay inequity in sports, the challenges faced in this play feel very familiar indeed. There is authenticity, grit, and grace in how these young women navigate these challenges... and Candrice doesn’t let anyone off with easy answers. The story is complicated, real, and messy, just like our lives. And, to get through it all, these characters must learn what it truly means to be part of a team.”
Patdro Harris directs the production which features scenic design by Moriah and Isabel Curley-Clay, costume design by Shilla Benning, lighting and projection design by Bradley Bergeron, sound design by Christopher Lane, properties design and scenic decoration by Caroline Cook, and basketball consulting by Kiesha Brown.
The new musical is celebrating the box office opening at the Nederlander with an offer for fans to get $20 tickets, harkening back to Rent's first-of-its-kind ticket lottery.
