La MaMa holds its Remake a World Gala November 10 to celebrate its 61st season and seventh decade. Cocktails kick off the event at 74A East 4th Street at 6 PM. Dinner, tributes, and entertainment follows at the Ellen Stewart Theatre located at 66 East 4th Street beginning at 7 PM.
Serving as honorary chair for the evening is National Medal of the Arts recipient and Obie Award winner Ping Chong (Humboldt's Current, Undesirable Elements). The event will honor Cecile Guidote-Alvarez from The Philippines, Richard Lanier from the United States, Álvaro Restrepo from Colombia, Beka Vučo from the Balkans and United States, Duk Hyung Yoo from South Korea, Belarus Free Theater from Belarus, and Serhiy Zhadan from Ukraine.
The evening's theme reflects the theatre company's theme for its 61st season which features more than 40 international works and artists from eight countries. "How can we remake a world? There is an urgent need to consider the many ways we can remake a world," said Artistic Director Mia Yoo in an earlier statement. "It is now that we must come together, connect, and create a movement that unifies and propels all of us forward toward a more just universe. We ask our artists and our wider community to contemplate this question."
