On the Red Carpet: Melissa Etheridge Celebrates My Window By Shouting Out Her High School Drama Teacher

Musician Melissa Etheridge got her first Grammy nomination for the hit single "Bring Me Some Water" from her self-titled 1988 debut album. She's been living a rockstar life—touring the world and racking up awards (and fans)—ever since. However, Broadway is a whole other beast of a schedule for the performer.

Playbill caught up with Etheridge as she walked the red carpet on opening night of her new Broadway show Melissa Etheridge: My Window. "Oh, you Broadway folks aren't kidding around. You get to work," she says. "This is very different. I usually roll into town on a bus, get out, do my show, get back on the bus, have a couple of days off or something. This is for real."

Accompanying herself on guitar, piano, drums, and looping machine, Etheridge walks fans through her life—in story and song—from her childhood in Kansas through her Grammy-winning career, detailing all of her struggles, including her battle with cancer and the death of her son, and ultimately finding peace.

"Yes, I bring up some very difficult subjects that were in my life," she says, "but its about showing everyone how to keep walking with joy, no matter what happens."

The show is written by Etheridge, with additional material by her wife, television writer and showrunner Linda Wallem-Etheridge (Nurse Jackie, That '70s Show). The onstage cast also includes Kate Owens, making her Broadway debut as "The Roadie." Amy Tinkham directs.

The creative team includes scenic design by Bruce Rodgers, costume design by Andréa Lauer, lighting design by Abigail Rosen Holmes, projection design by Olivia Sebesky, and sound design by Shannon Slaton.
