Industry News ruth tang Is Breaking the Binary's Inaugural Commission Recipient

The new theatre hub has also announced its partnership to present Spotlight On: TNB2S+ Songwriters as well as upcoming residencies.

Ruth Tang

Breaking the Binary Theatre has announced the inaugural recipient for its Commissioning Program will be ruth tang.

The initiative was formed for the creation and development of original, full-length works by transgender, non-binary, and Two-Spirit+ artists. As the inaugural recipient, tang will receive $10,000 to create an original work for Breaking the Binary. "We received a large number of impassioned commission proposals from our BTB alumni," said Founding Artistic Director George Strus, "so while the decision was not an easy one, all of us at Breaking the Binary Theatre could not be more thrilled to continue our relationship with ruth and work to develop a new piece with them over the course of the next year."

tang's Work Hard Have Fun Make History was workshopped at BTB's inaugural festival last fall. Clubbed Thumb's Summerworks subsequently gave it a world premiere production.
