Special Features The Look Book: Opening Night of The Wiz Brought Emerald City Realness to Broadway

From ruby reds to glimmering greens, the evening was certainly an Oz-ian affair.

Brandee Evans, Nichelle Lewis, and Kyle Ramar Freeman

The opening night of The Wiz on Broadway brought all the magic that the Oz-ian tale calls for. Because the show is a riff on The Wizard of Oz, the cast and attendees put their own spin on the iconography of the beloved tale: from the Emerald City to Dorothy's red slippers. On the yellow  carpet, there were dramatic silhouettes, bold colors, and even an elephant.

Read our in-depth coverage of the opening night here and see fashion highlights from the red carpet below.

Melody A. Betts

Styled by Ebony Brown, cast member Melody Betts is giving the most regal of ruby slipper vibes, with this show-stopping red ensemble by Jovana Louis, which features dramatic sleeves (reminiscent of her character Evillene in The Wiz). Betts' sleek hair, by Anita Soloman, provided a perfect counterpoint to the gown, pulling the look together from head to toe (makeup was by Trevis Lester).

Michael Samarie George Michaelah Reynolds

Michael Samarie George

Cast member Michael Samarie George looked as powerful as a wizard in this incredible set featuring a collared body suit and a blazer-style cape that commanded attention—in the best way. Their hair is beautifully styled up, leaving plenty of room to show off the unique structure of the collar, and to let their dazzling earrings shine.

Brandee Evans Michaelah Reynolds

Brandee Evans

Guest Brandee Evans brought all the Ozian opulence to the yellow carpet with this jaw-dropping metallic look akin to a bronze sculpture—an absolute work of art! Styled by Mickey Freeman, the skirt looks like liquid gold as it sways, perfectly balancing the structure of the bodice, which looks like it's straight out of the Roman Empire (the dress is by Gert-Johan Coetzee). This look will certainly be our Roman Empire (aka our obsession) for the weeks to come. Evans' hair was by Christina Rendall, and makeup by Billie Gene.

Nichelle Lewis Michaelah Reynolds

The Wiz's very own Dorothy ditched her blue plaid for full Emerald City elegance with this sultry neon green dress, which featured cutouts and a dash of sweetness with the sparkly bows. Her green bag adds even more shine. The ensemble gave an air of adult sophistication—Lewis may be playing an innocent girl but she is a new leading lady to be reckoned with.

Kyle Ramar Freeman Michaelah Reynolds

Kyle Ramar Freeman

See him roar! Cast member Kyle Ramar Freeman brought all the fierceness of a lion to the yellow carpet with this stunning custom piece (which Freeman designed with Aaron Ronelle and Byrd-Olivieri Atelier), featuring a vibrant combination of jewel tones, delicate lace, and a leather corset. Freeman topped it all off with gorgeous hair by Ashley Wise and bright, playful makeup by Anthony Giles. We aren't lion when we say that Freeman slayed this look!
