Veteran concert artist Marilyn Maye performs a benefit evening for the York Theatre Company May 16. Marilyn Maye in May begins at 7:30 PM at The York’s temporary home, The Theatre at St. Jean’s.
Maye is accompanied by Tedd Firth on piano.
Maye's "Too Late Now," recorded on her RCA The Lamp Is Low album, was chosen by the Smithsonian Institute and included in its 20th Century permanent collection. She made 76 appearances on Johnny Carson's TheTonightShow and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the mid-1960s as Best New Artist. Maye has also appeared in productions of Can-Can, Follies, Mame, and Hello, Dolly! She has toured the country for decades in concert halls and cabarets and was recently featured in a PBS concert filmed during the pandemic.
Proceeds from the event support Self Help Africa's work to alleviate hunger, poverty, social inequality, and the impact of climate change in sub-Saharan Africa.
Blackhurst is offering several concerts at the NYC venue in the coming months, including tributes to Ethel Merman, Jerry Herman, Hoagy Carmichael, and more.
