Artistic Director James C. Nicola will be honored ahead of departing the Off-Broadway company later this year.

New York Theatre Workshop hosts its 2022 Annual Gala April 11 at 6 PM at Capitale. 

Previously announced special guests for the gala include Anthony Rapp, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Shoshana Bean, Nikki M. James, Andy Mientus, Dina Martina, Somi Kakoma, Martha Redbone, The Bengsons, and stars of Hadestown.

James C. Nicola

The event also honors NYTW's longtime Artistic Director James C. Nicola. Nicola has served in the role for 34 years, creating workshop opportunities, summer residencies and fellowships, in addition to fosterinig NYTW's Usual Suspects artistic community. For his work, Nicola received a 2019 Obie Award for Lifetime Achievement. He departs NYTW June 30.

NYTW productions developed under his guidance include Jonathan Larson's Rent; Tony Kushner's Slavs! and Homebody/Kabul; Rick Elice’s Peter and the Starcatcher; Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová and Enda Walsh’s Once; David Bowie and Enda Walsh’s Lazarus; Dael Orlandersmith’s The Gimmick and Forever; Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown; Heidi Schreck’s What the Constitution Means to Me; Jeremy O. Harris’s Slave Play; Sam Gold’s production of Othello; and multiple productions directed by Ivo van Hove.

Kevin Cahoon directs the event which has been scripted by Tow Playwright-in-Residence Victor I. Cazares. The creative team includes music director Will Van Dyke, production designer Frank J. Oliva, lighting designer Stacey Derosier, sound designer Jaechelle Johnson, and line producer Rachel Frost. Serving as stage manager and assistant stage manager are Terri Kohler and Kelsey Durkin, respectively. Heredia Vision is the video producer with video by ZANNI Productions.

Robbie Gordy conducts the live auction. The gala raises nearly 10% of NYTW's annual budget, with proceeds supporting its productions as well as its workshops and additional programming.
